How to Start a Skincare Routine: The Beginner’s Guide

If you're a skincare beginner or overwhelmed by all the different skincare information on the internet about 10-step skincare regimens and confusing active ingredients - start here and learn how to start a skincare routine for beginners.

There is a lot of different information on social media, but the key to a good skincare routine is consistency. The best skincare routine is the one you will actually stick to.

Remember, when you are just getting started, less is more. Applying too many different skincare products and ingredients at once can damage your skin barrier and lead to breakouts, redness, and irritation. The foundation for a good skincare routine for beginners contains just 3 fundamental steps.

The Skincare Routine Basics

Whether you have oily, dry, or sensitive skin, every effective skincare regimen is built on the same 3 basics.

1. Cleansing is the non-negotiable first step. Throughout the day, your skin accumulates sweat, dirt, pollution, and dead skin cells. Using a cleanser at night cleanses your skin,  preventing clogged pores and dullness. In the morning, a light cleanse preps your skin to properly absorb the rest of your products.

Pro Tip: Look for a sulfate-free, gentle cleanser that doesn't leave your skin feeling "squeaky" or tight which means your barrier has been stripped of its natural, healthy oils.

2. Moisturize: Repairs the barrier and locks in hydration. Every single skin type needs a moisturizer - even oily and acne-prone skin! Moisturizers keep water trapped inside your skin and prevents dehydration. If you have dry skin - look for rich creams that contain ceramides. If you have oily skin - look for lighter, oil-free moisturizers.

3.Protect (SPF): Adding a broad-spectrum sunscreen defends against premature aging and damage. If you only do one thing for your skin, make it sunscreen! UV exposure is responsible for premature skin aging, including wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and hyperpigmentation (dark spots).

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single morning as the absolute final step in your routine and don't forget to reapply every few hours

☀️ Your Morning Skincare Routine Basics (Focus on Protection)

Your morning routine is all about protecting your skin from UV rays, pollution, and dirt

  1. Cleanse: Splash with water or use a gentle cleanser.

  2. Moisturize: Apply a light layer to hydrate.

  3. Protect: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen. If you use a moisturizing sunscreen, you can skip moisturizer!

🌙 Your Evening Skincare Routine Basics (Focus on Repair)

Your nighttime routine is focused on repair as you sleep overnight.

  1. Cleanse: Wash away makeup, SPF, and daily grime. (If you wear heavy makeup, consider "double cleansing" where you use an oil-based cleanser first, followed by your regular cleanser.

  2. Targeted Treatment: This is where you would apply a targeted skincare product depending on your primary skin concern, such as an acne spot treatment or a beginner-friendly retinol for fine lines.

  3. Moisturize: Apply a slightly richer moisturizer to support your skin barrier while you sleep.

When Should I Add Serums and Exfoliants?

Do not rush into adding chemical exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs) or strong retinols until you have consistently practiced your 3-step routine.

Once your skin barrier is hydrated, you can start targeting specific concerns:

  • For dark spots and dullness: Add a Vitamin C serum to your morning routine (before moisturizer).

  • For breakouts and clogged pores: Add a Salicylic Acid (BHA) liquid 2-3 nights a week.

  • For fine lines and texture: Introduce a gentle Retinol to your nighttime routine once or twice a week.

For beginners, always go slow. Add only one new product every 2-4 weeks to see if it irritates your skin.  Also get familiar with your skin type ( dry, oily, sensitive, acne-prone ) and purchase products formulated for your skin. And remember, change takes consistency and time - it can take 6-12 weeks of a consistent routine before you see real changes in your skin.
