What is Medical Grade Skincare?

If you're here, then the term "medical-grade skincare" has made it on your radar...but what is it exactly? Medical-grade skincare refers to scientifically backed skincare products, typically sold through dermatologists and licensed professionals to treat specific skin concerns such as acne, melasma or fine lines and wrinkles. Medical grade skincare formulas utilize pharmaceutical grade active ingredients and are backed with science and testing.

While the term "medical-grade" isn't regulated - there are some ways to identify if a skincare product qualifies as medical grade. The first being that you can only access medical-grade skincare products through professionals like medical spas, licensed physicians or their brand websites. As a partner of Rejuvenation Dermatology, Dermshop is backed by dermatologists and skincare professionals which enables us to be your trusted destination for medical-grade skincare.

How does medical-grade skincare differ?

Here are some of the key differences from medical-grade skincare vs. over the counter skincare products.

  • Drugstore or over the counter skincare products do not have to adhere to any regulated testing, so these skincare products don't have to pass any specific safety standards
  • Medical-grade skincare products use pharmaceutical grade active ingredients that are tested for efficacy and are designed to penetrate the skin.  Over-the-counter products tend to sit on the skin’s surface and are not formulated for skin absorption with the same level of  effectiveness.
  • Medical-grade skincare products can result in quicker results due to the efficacy of their ingredients and their rigorous testing.

Is medical-grade skincare more effective?

At Dermshop, we support medical-grade skincare because we believe in research and clinical evidence over marketing and hype.  You can potentially find effective, quality ingredients in drugstore skincare products but it can be more difficult.  Since medical-grade skincare products have been tested for efficacy, you're more likely to have visible results in a quicker time period.

Maybe you're no longer in your 20's, you're not seeing any results from your current skincare routine or you're struggling with stubborn skin concerns like hyperpigmentation and acne - introducing medical-grade skincare products that are backed by science and are tested and formulated by dermatologists and doctors, can be more effective and more likely to transform your skin.

However, it is also important to note that because some medical-grade skincare products tend to have higher concentrations of active ingredients, it's always best to consult with your dermatologist if a new skincare product is compatible for your skin type and skin concern.
