Scarring

Scarring of the skin can be caused by a multitude of factors, including skin conditions such as acne and rosacea; traumatic or burn injuries to the skin; pregnancy; or surgical procedures such as skin cancer removal. Scars are complex, and no two scars are the same. Rather, a dermatologist assesses scars on each of their potential individual features, including thickening or hypertrophy, pigment changes, redness, atrophy and textural changes. Depending on the makeup of your particular scar, a combination of advanced topical scar gels and in-office treatments with your dermatologist may be necessary. Probably no topical scar agent has more robust clinical trial evidence supporting its efficacy than silicone, although many other effective options exist. Here, our expert panel of board certified dermatologists have shared what they consider to be the most effective topical scar solutions on the market.
